What is AEO?

AEO stands for Answer Engine Optimization. It's the practice of structuring your website so that AI tools, Google's AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity, and similar, can pull a clear, accurate answer from it and use that answer directly.

That's the short version. Here's why it actually matters.

Why is AEO suddenly a thing?

Because a growing number of searches never produce a click anymore.

Someone types a question into Google, and increasingly, the answer just appears at the top of the page, generated by AI, pulling from a handful of sources. The person gets what they needed and moves on. No visit to your website required, unless your business happened to be one of the sources it pulled from.

The same thing is happening inside ChatGPT and Perplexity, where people now ask "who's a good local SEO agency near me" the same way they'd ask a friend, and get a direct answer back with a name or two attached.

Traditional SEO was about earning a high position in a list of links. AEO is about being the answer itself, or at least being named in it.

Does this mean traditional SEO doesn't matter anymore?

No, and be wary of anyone telling you otherwise.

AI systems still lean heavily on the same signals traditional SEO has always cared about: a real, accurate, well-structured website, a properly maintained Google Business Profile, and consistent business information across the web. AEO doesn't replace that work. It's what happens when you take that same solid foundation and make sure it's also easy for an AI system to read, extract, and trust.

Why does this matter more for local businesses specifically?

Because local queries are exactly where AI-generated answers already show up the most.

"Best plumber near me," "is there a barber open near me right now," "who does local SEO in Gateshead," these are the kinds of questions AI Overviews and voice assistants answer directly, often without the searcher ever seeing a full list of results.

For that to include your business, two things generally need to be true:

  • Your business information (name, address, phone number, sometimes called NAP) needs to be accurate and consistent everywhere it appears, your website, your Google Business Profile, and any directories you're listed in.
  • Your website needs to state clearly, in plain language, what you do and where you do it, rather than making an AI system guess.

Get those two things right and you're already most of the way there. Miss them, and it's genuinely hard for an AI system to confidently recommend you, even if you're the right business for the job.

How do you actually structure content for AEO?

The same way we've written this article, honestly.

  • Ask the real question as a heading. Not a vague topic, the actual thing someone would type or ask out loud.
  • Answer it directly, straight away. Don't make someone (or an AI model) read three paragraphs of preamble before getting to the point.
  • Keep the structure clean. Clear headings, short answers, no burying the useful bit under a pile of fluff.

This isn't really a trick. It's closer to just being genuinely easy to understand, which happens to be exactly what both humans and AI models are looking for.

What should a local business actually do about this?

Realistically, in this order:

  1. Get your Google Business Profile complete and accurate. It's still one of the biggest sources AI systems pull local business data from.
  2. Make sure your name, address and phone number match everywhere, your website, your GBP, any directories.
  3. Write your website content like you're answering a real question, because increasingly, you are, just to a machine as often as a person.
  4. Keep your local SEO fundamentals solid. AEO sits on top of local SEO, it doesn't replace it.

If your local SEO foundations are already shaky, AEO isn't a shortcut around fixing that, it's another reason to fix it. That's exactly the ground our Local Growth Care service covers for businesses across Gateshead and the North East, and if your website itself needs work first, that's what our website design service is for.

Is this something you need to worry about right now?

A little, not urgently, and definitely not by panicking.

AI-generated answers are a growing share of search, not the whole of it yet, and Google's local pack, ordinary organic results, and your Google Business Profile still matter enormously. Think of AEO as one more reason to get the fundamentals right, not a completely separate project to bolt on top.

Get found properly, on Google, on Maps, and now in AI answers too, and you're covering all the places your next customer might actually be looking.
